Welcome back to Koochie Khronicles - your sacred space for real, raw, and revolutionary conversations about vaginal health. This is Part 3 of our 5 part series with a board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Cynthia Fletcher, MD, where we get down to the nitty gritty and bust some of the most common (and most hilarious) myths about the koochie.
In this episode, we're diving into three popular myths:
🍍 "Does drinking pineapple juice make your vagina taste better?"
🌸 "Should your vagina always smell like flowers?"
⚖️ "What is a healthy vaginal pH balance?"
Let's get into it!!
The Pineapple Juice Myth: What's Really Goin on?
We've all heard it. The whispers, the TikToks, the "girl, drink this" advice floating around pineapple juice and vaginal flavor. But is it really a magical elixir?
Dr. Fletcher breaks it down: while pineapple juice (and other fruits) can slightly affect the taste of your vaginal secretions due to natural sugars and acids, it's not a cure-all for your koochie. What actually matters more is your overall health and hydration.
That said, pineapple juice does have some benefits - mainly thanks to its Vitamin C content. Vitamin C supports immune function, helps fight off infections, and promotes healthy skin and tissues (yes, including down there👀).
But it's not just pineapple that does the trick! Try incorporating other Vitamin C-rich foods like:
🥝 Kiwis
🫑 Bell Peppers
🍓 Strawberries
🍊 Oranges
🍈 Papayas
A balanced diet, drinking water, and avoiding heavily processed or sugary foods will do way more for your koochie than chugging pineapple juice alone ever could.
Should Your Vagina Smell Like Flowers?
Short answer? No. And it's time we stop expecting her to. Thee vagina is self-cleaning and has a natural, slightly tangy or musky scent that varies throughout your cycle. Dr. Fletcher reminds us that vaginal odor is completely normal - and any product trying to make you smell like roses, candy, or a tropical breeze is likely disrupting your natural balance.
Those scented washes, wipes, and sprays? Toss 'em. They can do more harm than good, often triggering irritation or even infections.
Let your koochie be what she is: a powerful, self-regulating, beautifully complex ecosystem.
What's a Normal pH Balance?
Your vagina pH is a critical part of your health - it plays a huge role in keeping infections at bay and maintaining balance.
A normal vaginal pH ranges between 3.8 and 4.5, which is slightly acidic. This environment helps protect against harmful bacteria and yeast.
🔻If your pH is too low (more acidic): You may feel irritation or experience increased discharge. this can happen with overuse of acidic products or from diet imbalances.
🔺If your pH is too high (more alkaline): You're more susceptible to infections like bacterial vaginosis or UTIs. Common triggers include douching, unprotected sex, certain soaps, or even stress.
The key? Be gentle with your koochie. Use pH-balanced products (or just warm water), avoid douching, and eat a diet rich in probiotics and nutrients.
Final Thoughts
Your koochie doesn't need to taste like candy or smell like a bouquet. She just needs you to listen, nourish, and love her as she is. This episode with Dr. Fletcher is a reminder to stay educated, stay empowered, and let go of unrealistic and harmful expectations.
